The colonial tea was heavy on sweets and light on historic appeal. We all marvelled at the bite sized shepherd pie (Tellingly, the only piece the generous Laurel refused to share; she savored it in many small bites.) The savories were the highlight, but curiously absent in lieu of lackluster sandwiches and overabundant tiny sweets. The soup (apparently what made this a time travelling tea and not just a heavy snack or light lunch) was a crab soup, described by James as “crab flavored cream.” This may have been a compliment.
Laurel is a colonial enthusiast, and we all settled into the front room of the tea house, under the watchful portrait of George and swapping teacups to ensure we each had the prettiest. All exclaimed over the tiny milk jug and petit sugar caddy. The conversations from large parties around us made the trip seem very jovial, and we were all pleased with the teas we selected (mine was too sweet for my taste--but what did I really expect, having ordered “cupid’s arrow” to slay the cold day.)
Laurel had be pining for this Colonial Tea for nearly a year after she had first heard of it but didn’t feel it had lived up to the promise of it’s name. Despite the day’s slush and less that authentic feel to the tea, we declared the trip a success; Reynold’s Tavern’s eclectic atmosphere and wide variety of delicious teas made for an enjoyable outing.
